On Saturday, May 23, 2026, our Basic Law celebrates its birthday. That's a truly special day! Because democracy thrives on everyone being able to express themselves freely and create something wonderful together, Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier has declared this day the first Participation Day.
We at KRASS e.V. Düsseldorf would like to celebrate this special day with you. We’ve come up with something really special for all children between the ages of 6 and 11: Starting at 2:00 p.m. at the Bürgerhaus Eller, we’ll be creating a giant work of art together! It’s going to be a great event!
What you can expect: Painting in motion!
Imagine a giant roll of paper spreading across the entire floor. That is your painting surface! Here you can let your creativity run wild with bright, colorful paints. We use brushes, sticks, sponges, cups, and spray bottles to bring the paint onto the paper. While music plays in the background, you move across the huge sheet of paper and let the colors dance. You can splash with your hands, dash across the paper with your feet, or let the paint fly while standing, jumping, and moving around.
Feel the color and discover yourself
In a playful way, you discover your own body awareness and feel how each of your movements transforms into colorful art. With us, there is no “right” or “wrong” – only your curiosity and the courage to experiment. You are free to express yourself and simply try out what happens when you move quickly, slowly, wildly, or very gently.
Creating something together: A huge team artwork
We experience true community: We share the space on the paper, are considerate of one another, and pay attention to what others create. In this way, many ideas and shared movement ultimately result in a huge work of art!
Bring old clothes!
Since we put our whole bodies into it painting and also use our hands and feet as ”brushes," please be sure to wear your oldest clothes. Ideally, clothes that you don’t mind at all if they end up covered in paint by the end of the afternoon and might never be completely clean again.

What exactly is the Day of Honor 2026?
This year, our Basic Law celebrates its 77th anniversary. It was first promulgated on May 23, 1949. The Basic Law is the most important set of rules governing our coexistence and ensures that we can all live freely and safely in Germany. But because democracy only works when people are willing to help shape the world around them, Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier has declared May 23 the first Germany-wide Day of Participation.
This participatory day aims to encourage people of all ages to actively participate and consciously experience community. Children, in particular, can playfully discover how much joy it brings to implement their own ideas and create something together. In this way, democracy is not only explained but also made tangible.
All across Germany, fantastic events take place on this special day, bringing people together, working together, and making a difference. It's a day for everyone who wants to show that participation and engagement can be truly enjoyable. In many other cities, people are also painting, building, discussing, or simply celebrating together to keep our freedom alive.
We at KRASS e.V. are marking this special day with an event that showcases just how colorful and diverse our community is. Together, we’re sending a message about fair coexistence and the courage to express ourselves creatively. Join us on this special day and celebrate democracy with us!
