On May 28, 2025, the city library in Düsseldorf-Eller was bustling with activity. The hall was almost full, with only a few seats empty. Many visitors eagerly awaited the performance by the KRASS children's theater club.
Then suddenly the cheerful song "Try a Little Tenderness" began to play. Five children danced, sang, and acted along, wearing homemade cardboard masks depicting characters from The Jungle Book. For the children were performing The Jungle Book as a play!
The children had been preparing for this special day for months. Since November, the children's theater club had been meeting regularly to create a play together. The children had come up with everything themselves.
The five children were supported by Ana and Africa Peres and Zeynep Alpay, all of whom work at KRASS. Together with the children, they chose The Jungle Book as the theme for their play. They then began planning the set design, making costumes, and learning the lines. This took some time, as each child was allowed to contribute their own ideas.
At KRASS's theatre club, the focus is on the joy of performing. Along the way, the children learn to read stories, talk about characters, and memorize lines. They perform anything that's fun: fairy tales, poems, and their own stories. In the future, the theatre club also plans to do improvisational theatre. Everything that happens on stage is spontaneous. This is great fun and offers lots of surprises – and plenty of laughs!
The Theater Club meets every Monday from 5 to 6 p.m. at the KRASS space in the Bürgerhaus Eller in Düsseldorf, located at Jägerstraße 31. Children ages six to twelve are welcome to drop by at any time. Participation is free, and no registration is required.
