Fashion and sewing school for girls and boys aged 6-15 years

Mode und Nähschule für Kinder und Jugendliche in Düsseldorf

The fashion and sewing school is a creative educational program for children and young people aged 6–10 and 11–15. It is aimed particularly at participants from families facing challenging life situations and from the immediate neighborhood. The goal is to teach them the basics of textile design in a playful and hands-on way and to promote a conscious approach to clothing and materials.

The fashion and sewing school takes place once a week for twelve weeks, with each session lasting two hours per age group. Participants work in small groups of no more than eight children to ensure individual attention and a pleasant learning environment. The courses are led by two experienced instructors who impart their expertise and provide creative inspiration.

Content and methods the fashion and sewing school

For the younger group (6–10 years), the focus is on getting to know fabrics and tools, as well as initial hand sewing exercises. The children learn basic stitches, how to handle needle and thread safely, and how to use a sewing machine in a playful way. Initial projects such as pillows, bags, or small stuffed animals ensure quick success.

The older group (11–15 years) builds on these foundations. Participants learn to read and follow simple sewing patterns, explore different types of fabric and their properties, and develop their own creative ideas. These are then implemented in fashion projects such as bags, skirts, accessories, or upcycling projects, where new items are created from old clothes.

Pedagogical approach

The concept combines hands-on learning with creative expression. Children and young people not only acquire practical skills but also strengthen their self-confidence, patience, and teamwork abilities. The practical work promotes fine motor skills and encourages a sustainable approach to textiles.

Organization and equipment

Several sewing machines, basic sewing tools, fabrics, and accessories are available for the workshop. Each participant receives materials for their own projects. At the end of the course, the children present their results in a small exhibition or fashion show.
