Good to know: What exactly is rap and what is its origin?
Rap is far more than just fast speaking over a beat. It is the art of placing words rhythmically and with a solid dose of flow in a way that tells a story or delivers a powerful message. Originally, rap is one of the four fundamental pillars of hip-hop culture, which also includes breakdancing, graffiti, and DJing.
Where does it come from?
The roots lie in the 1970s in the Bronx, New YorkThere, young people in the neighborhoods held so-called "block parties." The DJs quickly realized that people went absolutely wild when they extended the instrumental breaks on records. To keep the energy high, they started... MC's (Master of Ceremonies) to shout rhythmic phrases into the microphone – this is how rap, as we know it today, developed.
Rap in Germany
In Germany, this began around the beginning of the 1980s inspired by films from the USA. Pioneers like AdvancedChemistry brought political themes to German in the 90s, while bands like Die Fantastischen Vier They made rap accessible to the masses. Since then, the genre has changed drastically: from battle rap to profound storytelling to the modern trap sound that dominates the charts today. You can try it out in our rap workshop!
Where does the term rap come from?
This is actually one of the most discussed questions in the hip-hop world. There are two sides to it: the linguistic origin and a pretty cool theory that is often sold as the "meaning".
The word's origin: The word originally comes from English and means something like "to knock" or "to hit." As early as the 18th and 19th centuries, it was also used in British English to mean "to chat," "to talk," or "to speak quickly" (to rap). In the African American community of the 1960s, "to rap" then became slang for "to approach someone" or "to discuss intensely."
The acronym rumor: You often read online that RAP is an abbreviation for "Rhythm and Poetry." While that sounds incredibly fitting and is how many artists live today, historically speaking it's more of a "backronym" invention. That is, the abbreviation was invented later because it so perfectly describes the art form.
